Thanks to senior member Ianblyth from the Christopher Ward Forum for collating the transcript from the yearly chat with the big man himself. I have put it on one large web page to make it easier to read, rather than downloading the large Word Document. Enjoy!

First Question – Basel

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 8:59 pm

You seemed less than thrilled with Basel this year Anything that did catch your eye?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:00 pm

only the size of the stands

@ Sifion – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:00 pm

Hello there Wera!

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:00 pm

and the lack of real innovation

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:00 pm

it seemed they all put so much effort in to beating each other

@ jmarchitect – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:00 pm

hi wera.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:01 pm

they forgot about what really counts

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:01 pm

the product

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:01 pm

it was the worst trade show for innovation ever

@ grahamH – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:01 pm

grahamH joining in…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:01 pm

the only +ve is we dont show there and saved ourselves about £22m

@ eggtronics – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:02 pm

That Hublot Ferrari looked pretty minging I gotta say…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:02 pm

rolex had some nice straps

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:02 pm

is that Hublot or Hubris

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:02 pm

Ok closer to home…How about an obvious question that many want to know…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:02 pm

go on then

C61

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:03 pm

When does the C61 get released?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:03 pm

the c61 is ready

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:03 pm

but the bracelt is not

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:04 pm

so i dont really want to launch with only straps

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:04 pm

so sometime in august is favourite

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:04 pm

fras can show you the line up

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:04 pm

@ lankyfreak – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:04 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:05 pm

@ Amor Vincit Omnia – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:05 pm

Survey

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:06 pm

IN the meantime…Most recent survey..what did you learn and what was requested?

@ grahamH – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:06 pm

or on my iMac

@ Amor Vincit Omnia – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:06 pm

38mm bluey sounds nice!!

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:07 pm

Will the bracelet be brushed, or still have a lot of polish like the C60?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:07 pm

The survey was good actually… its the 4th time we have done it…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:07 pm

so we are beginning to read trends

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:07 pm

most trends are upwards in terms of value perception

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:07 pm

and product liking etc… but we also learned some stuff about you lot

@ lankyfreak – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:07 pm

cwchat1

@ lankyfreak – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

phew

@ Paul Drawmer – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

eh?

@ lankyfreak – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

sorry guys my mouse slipped

@ lankyfreak – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

several times!!

@ wizziethewiz – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

eg … your not very keen on seiko, tissot or swatch

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

C60 erratic quality though. C61 same supplier?

@ Kyybeli – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

Is that blue same as scooter blue?

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:08 pm

Hello all

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:09 pm

and you do like to aspire or already own

@ Amor Vincit Omnia – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:09 pm

Blue is cool!!

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:09 pm

Omega, rolex in a lot of instances and Tag

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:09 pm

so we are pleased to be associated there and not in the lower echylons

Quality

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:10 pm

we sell more c60s than anything else so in quality

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:10 pm

terms its no better or worse than any other watch

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:10 pm

wise

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:10 pm

however the incidence of failure is higher as there

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:11 pm

are a lot more out there…

@ jmarchitect – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:11 pm

c60 no longer the exclusive piece it was a year ago

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:11 pm

The survey asked for individual wants…any trends there?

@ stefs – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:11 pm

What is the percentage return for failure chris?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:11 pm

the main problem we found was that our supplier changed the way the bezel was constructed and we have already reverted to a new better standard…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:12 pm

over the coming months we will make further improvements…some of which are aesthetic and some of which will be technical

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:12 pm

Sorry, improvements to the C60?

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:13 pm

Still catching up…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:13 pm

returns come in for many reason… main one being i bought this for my wife …

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:13 pm

and she wants a blue one instead

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:13 pm

Timescale? Shall I wait before buying another?!

@ mikeodwyer – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:13 pm

chris any plans for a rose gold j2 ?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:13 pm

of the quality issues its less than 3% … then this in turn is split into

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:14 pm

servicing

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:14 pm

problems caused by the customer

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:14 pm

and then problems that have developed since it leaving here- not the of the customers making

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:14 pm

this is around 1% and getting lower

@ stefs – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

Ok thanks

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

timescale = spring 2014

@ RustyinRochester – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

While on the C60 topic, and plans to bring the Kingfisher back?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

rose gold j2 – assume yoy mean the SP

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

Thanks Chris

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

kingfisher

@ Beastmaster – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:15 pm

or a Chrono C60

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

one of my old favourites…why not

@ eggtronics – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

Would love to see a C60 chrono

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

Chrono C6. Wow!

@ Viognier – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

Hi Chris – would C60 improvements + ceramic bezel?

C60 Mk II Thoughts

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

we were thinking about a Mk2 for 2014… if there is a groundswell we will definitely do it

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

C60

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:16 pm

I think we could start looking to upgrade our c60s in the future….

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

I think that an MKII Kingfisher would work.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

and this is likely to be 2014… obviously executions like this always put pressure on price …upwards that is

@ mikeodwyer – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

sorry ,meant jumping hour rose gold

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

….. movement prices are already going up because of supply / demand reasons which we are all aware of….

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

Then ceramic on top… of course we can do … but it comes at a cost…

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

Would it be possible during such an upgrade to align the date wheel text with the rest of the text? This is this only thing stopping me buying a C60… ‘cos I am a bit odd

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:17 pm

Putting in an exhibition back compromises ATM to a degree so may not be the best of moves…

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

Personally. biggest bugbear is polished C60 centre links make one overly careful wearing. Would prefer brushed!

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

… and of course the movement then has to be more decorative so the price and leadtimes go up and out…

@ stefs – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

You see in house cw movements in near future

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

Speaking of movements…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

But certainly we are always looking to improve and this watch is one of our best sellers … so it is high on the agenda for an uplift…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

but we are conscious of rising costs. There were calls for bigger and smaller models also….

In House Movements – British

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

In house movements aside from JJ developments…current thoughts.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:18 pm

smaller… its on the way…38mm

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:19 pm

Maybe CW could collaborate with Bremont on a British movement

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:19 pm

in house movements hmmm

@ stefs – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:19 pm

Good smaller is better!

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:19 pm

give me some space here chaps

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:19 pm

i’ll giove you whats in my head

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:19 pm

The 42mm works very well I find. But 38mm sensible next step.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:20 pm

I see Bremont were in the Telegraph today talking about …stuff… apparently there are

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:20 pm

no other watchmakers in the UK … or so I am led to believe… Roger Smith must have defected to Switzerland and Robert Loomes

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:20 pm

must have fallen down a pot hole somewhere up north.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:20 pm

The fact is ..as far as I am concerned…and I may be alone on this…

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:20 pm

Yes – this was noted in the Forum

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:21 pm

at least outsode of CW… there is no way that movements can be built in the UK

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:21 pm

on an industrial scale that would satisfy our growth and demand…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:21 pm

not in my lifetime anyway… there isn’t the infrastructure here….

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:21 pm

That’s why we don’t make a song and dance about being british made… what

@ stefs – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:21 pm

Shame but not surprised

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:21 pm

does that mean anyway….. stick the last 7 screws in the back …

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

and put made in Britain on the dial… not sure that’s really right is it…morally wrong in my head albeit legally OK…. And also to say British Made

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

British “Assembled”…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

and have a swiss movement in the watch …which I believe is an important bit of the watch…

@ atnits – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

British straps could be a possibility I guess?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

is also a bit iffy in my book… so we are a british brand

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

Fact…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:22 pm

that uses the best movements (they come from Switzerland) Fact

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:23 pm

Absolutely the right stance

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:23 pm

And would love to see a resurgence in British watchmaking Fact

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:23 pm

But its not going to be like or challenge Switzerland in my lifetime.

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:23 pm

Could you foresee using Chinese movements if their quality improved?

Movements

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:23 pm

so that brings us to the kips question

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:24 pm

And how do you replace ETA when they supply you with zero….

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:24 pm

Or kinetic? or solar? or is that sacrilege?!

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:24 pm

we also still have access to the Eta movement in diminishing qtys whilst Sellita build up their production. Some other brands that have sat on their hands may not be so fortunate…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:24 pm

… and we are already being asked if we would like to take Chinese movements … disassemble them in Switzerland…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

give them a bit of spit and polish and call them Swiss made… well no thanks form here… but there are brands doing that….

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

Any quality difference between ETA and Sellita?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

And even submarining Chinese movements and passing off as Swiss…Provenance is everything to us, everything to me

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

we already open about hands , dials cases being made in China…

@ Sifion – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

How is Sellita doing in replacing ETA with a lot of orders? they are holding up ok, quantity and quality wise?

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

This is good to know

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

just like the other brands – made in china that is

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:25 pm

not being open… and that’s the way its going to stay.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:26 pm

Probably worth having a look at Mikes Blog post Baselworld and ask yourself

@ RustyinRochester – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:26 pm

Glad to see your position on correct movement labeling, Chris.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:26 pm

… why apart form the really big heritage brands in Hall 1 do hardly any of the other

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:26 pm

brands tell you what movements are in their watches… its probably because they are trying to be something they are not

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:26 pm

…. Manufactures….

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:26 pm

In fact we are closer to that than most…

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

We have been working on our own movement … in fact its

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

so secret I know have to type it in white….

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

… so there you have it… and that why are Partnership in Swizerland is so important

@ Bahnstormer_vRS – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

lol

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:27 pm

You need to work on your steganographic skillz

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

… ooops I nearly typed SwizzleLand!

@ stefs – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

Is it time for you and fraser to dazzle us with pictures of upcoming goodies?

@ eggtronics – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

good thing I have my xray glasses on

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

rival to the (more accurate) co-axial? Or is that patented for Omega only, so one cannot copy?

@ rcherryuk – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

J

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

The partnership we have out there is hand in hand with us …we are

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

Moving on then…Bluebird series..LY you mentioned a mechanical….still in the plan?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

almost like one company and we have access to some of the greatest talent money can buy and we will use it effectively

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

… in fact it may surprise you to know that in the league table of top 152 brands in Switzerland

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:28 pm

…we are …sorry would be 75th in volume terms

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:29 pm

… and in terms of Cosc… we would be fighting for a champions league place.

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:29 pm

sorry USA…thats football or soccer

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:29 pm

So British brand – yes and the biggest in the Luxury arena

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:29 pm

Made in Britain.. – no but fully support whats going

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 9:29 pm

c11. But crown guards look a bit cheap

@ Sifion – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:05 pm

the C20 has a somewhat formal feel to me, a crown guard does not go well with it. IMHO

@ nathanclarinet – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:05 pm

Why copy IWC?

@ Cirrus – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:05 pm

Can I ask a question now? I mean, apart from that one…

@ Kip – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:05 pm

Chris..last year you unveiled a new bracelet clasp- where has this gone?

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:06 pm

@ Deverica Wolf – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:06 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:15 pm

they basically supply all the bigger brands… the buckle alone costs almost 50chf to buy from the manufacturer but we can do it for only 40% of the price…and then only apply our mark up… not the bradd pitt equivalent… so i think we can have a really good upgrade for relatively little

@ rcherryuk – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:15 pm

The deployant or the plongeur?

@ TimR – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:16 pm

@ Christopher Ward – Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:16 pm

there will be a piece on the buckle in the next nmag
